What is Difela Tsa Sione?

Difela Tsa Sione — also written Lifela Tsa Sioneand translated as the “Hymns of Zion” — is a treasured collection of Sesotho Christian hymns sung by the Basotho people of Lesotho and South Africa. For generations these hymns have carried the faith, hope, and shared memory of families and congregations. They are sung in four-part harmony at church services, and they accompany the most important moments of life: baptisms and weddings, Sunday worship, night prayers, and funerals.

What makes these hymns so enduring is that they belong to everyone. They are passed from grandparents to grandchildren, learned by heart, and sung from memory. Many Basotho can recall the number of a favourite hymn long before they find the page. This collection brings all 449 of those hymns together in one place so that no one is ever without the words.

A living part of Basotho worship

In Basotho church life, singing is not a performance — it is participation. When a leader begins a hymn, the whole congregation joins in harmony, often without an instrument. The hymns of Zion are woven into this tradition. They teach scripture, comfort the grieving, celebrate joy, and bind a community together in a single voice.

Because the hymns are shared across many denominations and congregations, the same hymn may be sung in slightly different ways from one community to another. Our aim is to offer a clear, readable version of the Sesotho text that respects the way the hymns are commonly sung, while remaining easy to follow on a phone or computer screen.

How this collection is organised

Every hymn keeps its traditional number, exactly as it appears in the printed hymnal, so you can find a hymn the way you already remember it. Each hymn has its own page showing:

• the Sesotho title and full verses, grouped into stanzas the way they are sung;
• an English translation where one is available, which you can show or hide;
• simple reading controls to adjust the text size and switch between Sesotho, English, or both;
• links to the previous and next hymns and to related hymns nearby, so you can browse naturally.

You can also search the whole collection by number, by title, or by any words you remember from the verses — useful when a tune is on the tip of your tongue but the number has slipped your mind.

Who is behind this collection?

This is an independent, community-minded project created to preserve and share the hymns of Zion. It is offered free of charge. The website is supported by modest advertising, which simply helps cover the cost of keeping the collection online and available to everyone. There is no account to create and nothing to buy.
